Overview

The World Family English Learning System is a market-leading language program for children with non-English speaking parents, designed to teach English through books, toys, videos, songs, and interactive tools. Invented in the 1970s by Anne Dow, a leading language learning expert, it fosters natural and playful language acquisition.

To modernize this iconic system, Circ designed a child-friendly protective casing for the newly introduced English Tab™ e-learning device.

Design Process

We embarked on a thorough investigation of the usability opportunities for a tablet case for children from ages 0-6 years old. This involved a thorough research and opportunity mapping phase, as well as prototyping and testing several ideas with children through workshops. As the project progressed, great care was taken to comply with ISO 8124 child safety standards and create a design that was ergonomic, functional and user-friendly.

Y-shaped profile

The patented Y-shaped design solves several common issues in children’s electronic devices by providing impact protection, minimizing volume and weight, preventing accidental button presses from young children, and safeguarding ports when charging.

Design for manufacture

We worked closely with the manufacturer to ensure that the glue-less, tool-less assembly of the devices’ casing enables easy access for maintenance and part replacement and ensures that materials can be easily separated for recycling at end-of-life.
